Nail stickers are one of the easiest ways to get intricate, salon-level designs at home—no steady hand required. Whether you’re working with a regular manicure or gel, the process is simple once you know the steps. Here’s a start-to-finish guide to make your manicure look clean, long-lasting, and professionally done.
What You’ll Need
- Nail stickers
- Nail file
- Cuticle pusher
- Nail buffer (optional)
- Alcohol wipe or nail cleanser
- Base coat
- Nail polish (optional)
- Top coat (regular or gel)
- Tweezers (helpful, but not required)
Step 1: Prep Your Nails Properly
This is where most people go wrong. Good prep = long wear.
Start with clean, dry nails. Remove any old polish and wash your hands thoroughly. Gently push back your cuticles and lightly buff the nail surface if you have ridges or shine.
Wipe each nail with alcohol or nail cleanser to remove oils—this helps everything adhere better.
Step 2: Apply Your Base
For a Regular Manicure:
Apply a thin layer of base coat and let it dry completely.
If you want a colored background, apply your polish and let it dry fully before moving on.
For a Gel Manicure:
Apply your gel base coat and cure.
Add your gel color if desired and cure again. Make sure the final layer is smooth and not overly thick.
Tip: For a unique look, try our stickers over cat-eye gel polish.
Step 3: Apply the Nail Stickers
Carefully peel your sticker from the sheet. Tweezers are very helpful for precision and easy removal without tearing, especially for smaller designs.
Place the sticker gently onto your nail. Don’t press it down immediately—hover and adjust placement first. Once it’s positioned exactly where you want it, press it down starting from the center and smooth outward to avoid air bubbles.
Use a finger or a silicone tool to press the edges down firmly.
Tip: Trim nail stickers if they are too big. Cut them to create an overlapping effect.
Step 4: Seal the Design
This is what locks everything in and makes it long lasting.
For Regular Polish:
Apply a generous layer of top coat, making sure to fully cover the sticker and seal the edges.
If needed, apply a second coat once the first is dry.
For Gel:
Apply a gel top coat over the entire nail and cure. Make sure to seal all the stickers' edges.
For extra durability, you can do a second layer.
Step 5: Clean Up and Finish
If any edges feel raised, gently file them down and apply another thin layer of top coat.
Finish with cuticle oil for a polished, hydrated look.
Tips for the Best Results
- Apply stickers on completely dry polish—rushing this causes lifting
- Avoid touching the adhesive side of the sticker too much
- Seal edges well to prevent peeling
- For gel, always cap the free edge with top coat
- Store your stickers in a cool, dry place so they stay adhesive
How Long Do Nail Stickers Last?
- With regular polish: 7–14 days
- With gel: up to 2–3 weeks
Longevity depends mostly on prep and how well you seal them.
How to Remove Nail Stickers
For regular polish, use nail polish remover as usual.
For gel, soak off your manicure or file the top layer before soaking.
Nail stickers are meant to make things easier—not more complicated. Once you’ve done it once or twice, the process becomes second nature, and you’ll be able to create detailed, custom-looking nails in minutes.
If you want to experiment, try layering stickers, mixing designs, or placing them over sheer or jelly polish for a more dimensional look.
